Mamas

Does anyone have an explanation for why homebirth advocates use infantilizing language? Why are pregnant women called "Mamas" by other grown women? For most of human existence women have had to struggle to be taken seriously as individuals with unique personal strengths and moral value. Why do homebirth advocates insist on perpetuating the stereotype that women (particularly women who are pregnant or have children) must thought of exclusively within the context of their motherhood? Can you imagine any adults referring to and addressing grown men as "Dadas"?

Why do DEMs and other homebirth advocates speak to women as if they were little children, telling them that they are beautiful, for example, or telling them that they are "proud" of them. It has been so difficult for women to reach the point where they are recognized as adults; why do homebirth advocates act like women are little children?
